We talk with kayak angler Matthew Chapman about the similarities and differences between the Susquehanna and Shenandoah Rivers for smallmouth bass.
Shenandoah River largemouth bass fishing may not be what the River is known for but Wes Smallwood shows they are worth our attention.
The Shenandoah River is a prime smallmouth bass fishing destination. Brian Dauer breaks down how he approaches fishing this Virginia hot spot.
We discuss largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing on Virginia’s South Fork of the Shenandoah River with Kevin Whitfield from Old Dominion Outfitters and Guide Service.
Interviews with Ardent Outdoors sponsored and pro staff anglers.
It was my pleasure to talk with Priscilla Johnson about one of her favorite techniques with one of her favorite baits, the Ned Rig with a Z-Man TRD. Priscilla discusses her approach when fishing the bait. We also discuss her love of Vibe kayaks.
Professional guides don’t have the option of sitting out a day on the water due to tough conditions. Also, days without fish in the boat are not good for business. So, I took the opportunity to ask Life Outdoors Unlimited Guide Scott Johnson about how he fishes through tough conditions. Scott guides on two amazing fisheries, Susquehanna River and Upper Potomac. Both are known for their clear shallow water and their amazing smallmouth bass fishing. In this interview, Scott teaches us how to get it done no matter what the conditions.
I love this interview. Ok, I love all my interviews and appreciate the time everyone provides. But this one is unique. Ok, all of them are unique. So instead of trying to describe with generalized praise that could be used for all of the anglers that give time to contribute to DockTalk365, let me just be real specific about this one with Spotswood Payne, a Virginia trout, bass and musky professional fishing guide. I tried asking Spotswood about his approach to guiding. When I reviewed his answers, I realized that every answer not only answers about his approach to guiding but also provides important lessons for all of us recreational anglers as well. I also realized and loved that Spotswood goes to a deeper level answering with philosophical and theoretical approaches to fishing rather than solely answering on the practical level of what fly or lure to throw when. While I do like to be told what to throw when, I also love contemplating fishing on a deeper level, which is something Spotswood clearly does. So keep reading and I know you will love this interview as much as I do.
We had such a great time talking with Wes Smallwood, that we had to put the interview into two parts. If you haven’t read part I, you can read it here. In this interview, we start where we left off talking about Wes’ dad and the positive memories created by taking his son fishing. Thank you Wes’ dad! We then get into some Virginia fishing discussion including the fish story behind Wes’ Trophy Citation Smallmouth Bass. Fantastic reading from this young up and coming competitive kayak angler.
It is not often to have the honor to speak with someone who has appeared on the cover of Bassmaster Magazine. So, I was really happy when Mike Mueller agreed to do the interview. Not only do we talk about Mike’s fishing but he breaks down his success with getting sponsorships, which is great advice for all those seeking these type of opportunities.
